Healthy Vegan - A Walk Around Brighton's Museum & Art Gallery

After the Royal Pavilion, we went into Brighton's Museum & Art Gallery. 
Its been a while since I went to a museum and art gallery.  The last time was in Glasgows Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery and it was free to the public.  This one in Brighton cost us, but it included entry to the Royal Pavilion (click here if you missed my blog post).  
I wanted to share this post for another reason, October is Black History Month in the UK and some of the collections at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery were very though provoking and enlightening.
One of the many Black Brighton Pioneers - Sake Dean Mahomed (1759-1851).  Click here to read more about this inspiring figure. 
Sake Dean Mahomed is also dubbed to be the First Man of Curry, now that's an accolade or maybe not as he was the first to open an Indian restaurant in London.  He invented the term 'shampoo' and he was apparently the first Indian to write and publish a book in English.

One of the enthusiastic workers at the gallery called Martina shared with me the background to The Wax Print Debate _ Not African and Not Authentic.  It was extremely enlightening.  See Martina here for a five minute explanation around the debate. 

I am not a fashionista, but I did rather enjoyed and seeing the Fashion Cities Africa exhibition: Casablanca, Johannesburg, Lagos and Nairobi which explores diversity and its global influence from catwalk couture to street style.   
My favourite were  2ManySiblings in the Nairobi gallery as their contribution was very interesting and different in that they were not actually fashion designers and created their own style from second hand clothing and then using social media to raise awareness of their work.

l have a confession to make.  I don't like mashed potatoes.  It is baby food designed for grown ups. I avoid making it, but if I have to t he only way I can eat it is if it is disguised in panko crusted  croquettes or dolloped over a good Vegetarian Shepherdess Pie,   but my dearest loves mashed potatoes, so it is for him I make them now and again.   Here the mashed potatoes are enhanced with herby dill and a good smack of horseradish powder or sauce. Healthy Vegan - 13 Black Food Recipes for Halloween

I have black quinoa, black rice and black garlic in my kitchen to experiment with over the weekend, but with Halloween fast becoming UKs most commercialised event after Christmas , I thought I would shamelessly  jump on the bandwagon and share some vegetarian and vegan black coloured food recipes you could easily make at home for the Halloween party (or maybe not). This is  Sweet Black Butter  (vegan)  made with black sesame seeds. Healthy Vegan - Three Pea Tagine with Cherry Tomatoes

These days, I don't have much energy to cook from scratch when I get in from work unless its something like pasta such as  Spaghetti dish, but strangely enough I did actually make this Three Pea Tagine after work in the late evening.   I was rather surprised that I had both the energy and the inclination.  This was one of those days, when i decided to myself that I was not going to plonk myself in front of either the computer or sofa and instead use those couple of hours a little more usefully, then laze.  Other than making couscous, grub was made and it was plenty to last us two days if not more.   Its actually a relatively easy recipe, after sauteing the onions, garlic and spices, you could happily leave it for 40 - 45 minutes for the yellow split peas to cook in the vegetable stock, then stir in the remaining ingredients such as chickpeas, raisins, green peas, cherry tomatoes which happen to be home gown for 10 minutes and its pretty much done.  ...
